My first comment is that maybe the title of this site needs a re-think. I assume GFC stands for the Global Financial Crisis. The current capitalist crisis has now begun to impact in a very big way in the ‘real’ economy. Tens of thousands of jobs have been lost and two of the biggest car manufacturers in the US (GM & Chrysler) are on the verge of collapse. They may only avert that fate with the injection of millions of public dollars where a nationalisation under democratic control would in my view be more viable and a better solution all round.

Have just watched a doco made by Naomi Klein entitled “The Take” (yep… it’s in all good dvd rental outlets). “The Take” is about Argentinian workers fighting the sack… from battling riot police… to occupying factories and restarting production… to lobbying the government for permission to run these enterprises as co-ops. The film includes workers’ views on the issues facing them, their analyses of the causes and the impact on their personal lives. The weakness of “The Take” for me is the decision by Naomi Klein to excise the really meaty stuff… the debates between workers and the battle of ideas that must have gone on for them to reach the conclusions they did.
Another doco in this vein I can recommend is “Harlan County USA” about a miners’ strike in Louisville Kentucky some years ago. “Harlan County” DOES include the debates. There is also a feature film starring Holly Hunter made subsequently based (I don’t know how loosely) on the facts in the case called “Harlan County War”. Haven’t seen it but will comment once I have.
